Given, the same temperature conditions, the natural mobility rate is the determinant of specific oxygen uptake, energy metabolism, the ratio between protein and lipid used in metabolism, the level of tissue enzyme activity, the rate of self-replenishment of proteins, the energy capacity of tissues, the concentration of erythrocytes and haemoglobin in the blood, the lipid fraction and fatty acid composition of lipids in the liver and other tissues, and the pattern of mobilization in endogenous feeding. [Pg.241]

The effects of berbamine on energy metabolism in isolated rat alveolar type II cells (cells which play a critical role in the maintenance of normal lung function) were studied. Incubation of type II cells with berbamine produced a reduction in cellular ATP content, but there was no effect of the alkaloid on cellular oxygen consumption. Berbamine produced an increase in internal calcium levels of type II cells, and incubation of the cells with calcium ionophore, 4-bromo A-23187, led to increased amounts of cellular calcium and reductions in ATP levels, with no effect on oxygen consumption. Exposure of isolated lung mitochondria to calcium produced a concentration-dependent reduction in ATP synthesis with no effect on mitochondrial oxygen... [Pg.123]

These results dramatically lower free ATP levels in HIF-la-deficient hypoxic cells (Seagraves et al., 2001). It is interesting to see that this switch of energy metabolism is regulated by one transcription factor HIF-la, the primary regulator of oxygen homeostasis, because HlF-la deficiency reduces energy metabolism. [Pg.239]
