Outside system battery limit

The common mistake observed is the capital cost estimate for a retrofit project being too low compared with reality. The main reason is that it does not include installation and the outside system battery limit (OSBL) cost, which could be as expensive as the inside system battery limit (ISBL) cost. This topic is discussed in Section 22.6. 

For the same production capacity, the oxygen-based process requires fewer reactors, all of which operate in parallel and are exposed to reaction gas of the same composition. However, the use of purge reactors in series for an air-based process in conjunction with the associated energy recovery system increases the overall complexity of the unit. Given the same degree of automation, the operation of an oxygen-based unit is simpler and easier if the air-separation plant is outside the battery limits of the ethylene oxide process (97). 

For fire protection purposes, drainage systems that may contain flammable vapors should be sealed and vented both inside the battery limit and outside the battery limit. In the absence of these provisions, flammable or toxic vapors and gases may migrate into an area well away from where the release occurred, thus spreading the hazard. 

Occurrence Reporting and Processing System Outside Battery Limits... 

The investment cost will be given, indicated as ISBL (inside battery limit plant, laboratories, process control system, etc.), OSBL (outside battery limit) or infrastructure costs. It is expected that the OSBL costs for a micro structured reactor plant will be a minor issue as here mainly costs for housing, cooling facilities, etc., are included.

There is no hazardous waste generated when lithium batteries are recycled at Toxco Inc. There is no municipal sewer system in the processing area and air emissions are collected via a direct-capture-system over each of the reaction areas. These fumes are processed through three air filters coimected in series the first is a wet bed fume scrubber which removes particulate material, the second is a traveling bed filter to further remove particulate material, and the third treats the emissions chemically. Each year Toxco is required to hire an outside environmental audit firm to test the emissions for conformance with their permit. The 1999 results are presented in Table 1. As one can see the emissions are quite minor in comparison to the allowable limits.
