Other Products from Starch

The chapter on com and sorghum starch production not only thoroughly covers advances in understanding and in carrying out the wet-milling process, but also alternative com kernel fractionation techniques, the relationship of starch production to other products from com grain and future directions. 

BCI produced approx. 40 mmol H2 from 1/ of the starch-containing H2 production medium. Almost the same amount of H2 was evolved by the 2-membered cocultures consisting of strains A-501 and T-522, and of strains A-501 and T-59. The other 2-membered cocultures, consisting of R. marinum A-501 and P. vulgaris T-51 or T-53 to T-58, failed to evolve H2. Thus, it was confirmed that H2 production from starch was a result of cooperation between R. marinum and V. fluvialis. 

The other major use of starch is as a raw material for the production of chemicals for the synthesis of other polymers. The production of other chemicals from starch was recently reviewed by Robertson et al. [34], Koutinas et al. [35], Kennedy et al. [36] and Otey and Doane [37]. In general, three different approaches have been employed in the production of polymeric materials from starch-derived chemicals ... 

Starch pyrodextrins and British gums have the abiUty, in aqueous dispersion, to form films capable of bonding like or unlike materials. Thus, they have uses as adhesives for envelopes, postage stamps, and other products. These dextrins are used in glass-fiber siting to protect the extmded fiber from abrasion, and as binders for metal core castings, water color paints, briquettes, and many other composite materials (qv).
