Replacement of Oxygen by Other Chalcogens. Acids derived from oxoacids by replacement of oxygen by sulfur are called thioacids, and the number of replacements are given by prefixes di-, tri-, and so on. The affixes seleno- and telluro- are used analogously. [Pg.220]

HCIO4, one of the strongest of the mineral acids. The perchlorates are more stable than the other chlorine oxyanions, ie, chlorates, CIO chlorites, CIO or hypochlorites, OCf (3) (see Chlorine oxygen acids and salts). Styrene undergoes many reactions of an unsaturated compound, such as addition, and of an aromatic compound, such as substitution (2,8). It reacts with various oxidising agents to form styrene oxide, ben2aldehyde, benzoic acid, and other oxygenated compounds. It reacts with benzene on an acidic catalyst to form diphenylethane. Further dehydrogenation of styrene to phenylacetylene is unfavorable even at the high temperature of 600°C, but a concentration of about 50 ppm of phenylacetylene is usually seen in the commercial styrene product. [Pg.477]

Methylarsine, trifluoromethylarsine, and bis(trifluoromethyl)arsine [371-74-4] C2HAsF, are gases at room temperature all other primary and secondary arsines are liquids or solids. These compounds are extremely sensitive to oxygen, and ia some cases are spontaneously inflammable ia air (45). They readily undergo addition reactions with alkenes (51), alkynes (52), aldehydes (qv) (53), ketones (qv) (54), isocyanates (55), and a2o compounds (56). They also react with diborane (43) and a variety of other Lewis acids. Alkyl haUdes react with primary and secondary arsiaes to yield quaternary arsenic compounds (57). [Pg.336]

It was pointed out earlier that the low nucleophilicity of fluoride ion and its low concentration in HF solutions can create circumstances not commonly observed with the other halogen acids. Under such conditions rearrangement reactions either of a concerted nature or via a true carbonium ion may compete with nucleophilic attack by fluoride ion. To favor the latter the addition of oxygen bases, e.g., tetrahydrofuran, to the medium in the proper concentration can provide the required increase in fluoride ion concentration without harmful reduction in the acidity of the medium. [Pg.433]

The acylation of enamino ketones can take place on oxygen or on carbon. While reaction at nitrogen is a possibility, the N-acylated products are themselves acylating agents, and further reaction normally takes place. The first reported acylation of enamino ketones (72) was that of 129, prepared by acylation of the enamine (113), which was shown to have undergone O acylation because on mild hydrolysis the enol ester (130) could be isolated. A similar reaction took place with other aliphatic acid chlorides (80) and with dibasic acid chlorides [e.g., with succinyl chloride to give 118 above]. [Pg.142]

Animal cells can modify arachidonic acid and other polyunsaturated fatty acids, in processes often involving cyclization and oxygenation, to produce so-called local hormones that (1) exert their effects at very low concentrations and (2) usually act near their sites of synthesis. These substances include the prostaglandins (PG) (Figure 25.27) as well as thromboxanes (Tx), leukotrienes, and other hydroxyeicosanoic acids. Thromboxanes, discovered in blood platelets (thrombocytes), are cyclic ethers (TxBg is actually a hemiacetal see Figure 25.27) with a hydroxyl group at C-15. [Pg.829]
