Oscillations mixed mode type

The oscillations shown in Figure 8.1 are of the mixed-mode type, in which each period contains a mixture of large-amplitude and small-amplitude peaks. Mixedmode oscillations are perhaps the most commonly occurring form of complex oscillations in chemical systems. In order to develop some intuitive feel for how such behavior might arise, we employ a picture based on slow manifolds and utilized by a variety of authors (Boissonade, 1976 Rossler, 1976 Rinzel, 1987 Barkley, 1988) to analyze mixed-mode oscillations and other forms of complex dynamical behavior. The analysis rests on the schematic diagram shown in Figure 8.2. [Pg.164]

We have selected a broad cross section of analog and mixed-mode designs, which we have simulated, as well as constructed. The circuits are grouped into logical chapters. Generic topics, such as oscillators, amplifiers/receivers, power converters, and filters, all head their own chapter. Each chapter starts with a brief overview of the function of the circuits in the chapter. This is followed by several circuit examples. Another most remarkable experimental study in which the two types of mixed-mode sequences were also observed was carried out by Albahadily et al, who studied the electrodissolution of copper in phosphoric acid from a rotating disk. Figure 30 shows a series of Farey states observed in this system, and in Fig. 31, the experimentally observed mixed-mode states are listed in the structure of a Farey tree. On the high rotation-rate end of the 1° state, alternating periodic and chaotic behavior appeared. Other mixed-mode oscillations of this type have been seen in the Bray reaction (Chopin-Dumas, 1978) and several chlorite-based oscillators (Orban and Epstein, 1982 Alamgir and Epstein, 1985a, 1985b). Apart from inversions, there is another way to determine whether or not there is mixing in the Sun. Any spherically symmetric, localized sharp feature or discontinuity in the Sun s internal structure leaves a definite signature on the solar p-mode frequencies. Gough (1990) showed that changes of this type contribute a characteristic oscillatory component to the frequencies z/ / of those modes which penetrate below the localized perturbation. The amplitude of the oscillations increases with increasing severity of the discontinuity, and the wavelength of the oscillation is essentially the acoustic depth of the sharp-feature.
