Silicon organometallic

In some cases the modulus and strength are so low that fillers are often added for stiffness. Carbon black, as a filler, is used extensively in car tyres, and it is thought that the surface bonding with the rubber occurs, thus providing stiffness. Finely divided silica, which has been surface treated with organometallic silicon and titanium compounds, is also used.

Although inhibitors are deliberately added to the silicone formulation to control cure rate, unwanted cure inhibition can be caused by other species that react to form strong complexes with the platinum catalyst. Most notable of these undesired inhibitors include organotin and other organometallic compounds, sulfur, polysulfides, polysulfones or other sulfur-containing materials, amines, urethanes or amine-containing materials, unsaturated hydrocarbons in plasticizers, and some solder flux residues.

An example of particular interest is the two-fold introduction of M(CO)n moieties at silicon to give HMPA adducts of organometallic analogues of silaallene. It has been shown that this reaction proceeds through the dichlorosilylene complex as intermediate. Both the iron 22 and ruthenium 23 compound and also the bimetallic complex 24 are accessible.
