From organometallic compounds

The reductive decomposition of alkylmercury compounds is also a useful source of radicals.300 The organomercury compounds are available by oxymercuration (see Section 4.1.3) or from organometallic compounds as a result of metal-metal exchange (see Section 7.3.3). 

In the most general sense, any anion radical produced by reduction with a metal, or by electrolytic reduction in the presence of a metallic counterion could be considered an organometallic anion radical. Any review based on such a definition would be monumental. To achieve a manageable volume of material, with a content suitable to the context of this series, we have limited this chapter to anion radicals produced from organometallic compounds. Anion radicals for which the metal is present solely as the reducing agent or counterion have, for the most part, been excluded. 

The hydride transfer is analogous to the transfer of R e from organometallic compounds to carbonyl groups (Section 14-12A). 

The basic composition is usually derived from oxides or carbonates, e.g. BaCC>3, SrCC>3, TiC>2, La2C>3 etc., which are mixed in a polyethylene-lined ball-mill using mullite or agate balls and deionized water. Alternatively, and if economically viable, the mix can be synthesized from organometallic compounds, usually in conjunction with soluble inorganic salts. 

Apart from organometallic compounds there are a few other compounds of zerova-lent zirconium. The reduction of ZrCLt with lithium in the presence of bipyridine in THF gives violet Zr(bipy)4 where, doubtless, there is considerable delocalization of electrons over the ligands. The reaction of KCN or RbCN with ZrCl3 in liquid ammonia is reported to give M Zr(CN)5. 

Complexes containing vanadium in low oxidation states, apart from organometallic compounds, are known with ligands such as bipy, phen, nitric oxide, and tertiary phosphines, which stabihze such oxidation states. Depending on their electronic structure, V and V complexes may be diamagnetic, which permits study by NMR spectroscopy, and EPR spectroscopy has been used to study paramagnetic V complexes.
