On the other hand, Bhattacharya et al. have reported the plasticization effect of organically modified layered silicates on dynamic mechanical properties [13]. In this work, nanocomposites of SBR have been prepared using various nanofillers like modified and unmodified montmorillonite, SP, hectorite etc. It has been observed that the Tg shifts to lower temperature in all the nanocomposites, except for systems from hectorite and NA. This is due to the fact that clay layers form capillaries parallel to each other as they become oriented in a particular direction. Due to wall slippage of the unattached polymer through these capillaries, the Tg is lowered, which could be even more in the absence of organo-modifiers [13]. The formation and equilibrium structure of polymer layered silicate nanocomposites, in particular with organically modified layered silicates, has been shown to be a strong function of the nature of the polymer (polar or apolar), the charge carrying capacity of the layered silicate, as well as the chain length and structure of the cationic surfactant. However, both the polymer/silicate compatibility and hybrid equilibrium structure for these nanocomposites are observed to be independent of polymer molecular weight. The experimental results have been summarized by Vaia et al. and a lattice based mean field theory has been developed to explain these results [26].

There have been a number of studies dedicated to organically modified layered silicate reinforced completely biodegradable nanocomposites to target highly exfoliated structures. Renewable resources-based biodegradable polymers utilized so far for the preparation of nanocomposites are poly(lactic acid) (PLA) [40-68,11-15], poly(3-hydroxy butyrate) (PHB) [69,16-20] thermoplastic starch [71-77,21-25], plant oils [78-81,26-30], cellulose [82,83,30,31], etc. The following section deals with the transformation of the properties of renewable sources-based biodegradable polymers as their layered silicate nanocomposites.
