A water soluble liquid formulation (WSL) is prepared from pesticides that are highly water soluble. This is, by far, the simplest type of formulation. One distinct advantage of WSL s over other formulations is that the field spray dilutions are infinitely stable as true solutions. Pesticides that are hydrophilic and ionic, such as inorganic or organic metallic salts, often fall into this category. Unfortunately, only a small portion of all pesticides are adequately soluble in water. [Pg.87]

Bulk Liquid Membranes (BLM). This is the simplest type of liquid membrane (2-8) and is utilized for fundamental studies of certain aspects of liquid membrane transport processes. In one such process, a beaker-in-a-beaker cell (Figure 1) consists of inner and outer compartments which contain the aqueous feed (F) and strip (S) solutions, respectively. The inner beaker contains the stripping solution and is surroimded by the feed solution. Both aqueous solutions contact the upper organic layer, which is the liquid membrane. Mass transfer takes place from the feed solution through the liquid membrane and into the strip solution. Bartsch et aL studied the transport of alkali metal cations across bulk liquid membranes in which a crown ether carboxylic acid in the organic layer served as the carrier (2,3). [Pg.363]

Solvent extraction has become a common technique for the determination of formation constants, P , of aqneons hydrophilic metal complexes of type MX , particularly in the case when the metal is only available in trace concentrations, as the distribntion can easily be measnred with radioactive techniques (see also section 4.15). The method reqnires the formation of an extractable complex of the metal ion, which, in the simplest and most commonly used case, is an nn-charged lipophilic complex of type MA. The metal-organic complex MA serves as a probe for the concentration of metal ions in the aqueous phase through its equilibrium with the free section 4.8.2. This same principle is used in the design of metal selective electrodes (see Chapter 15). Extractants typically used for this purpose are P-diketones like acetylacetone (HAA) or thenoyltrifluoroacteone (TTA), and weak large organic acids like dinonyl naph-talene sulphonic acid (DNNA). [Pg.171]

Iron/sulfur clusters are inorganic cofactors that are used in all cells (10). They comprise ions and iron ions in the +2 or -f3 state (Fig. 1). Iron/sulfur clusters are essential cofactors for numerous redox and nonredox enzymes, alone or in tandem with organic cofactors such as llavocoenzymes and/or pyridine nucleotides. The simplest structural type is the rhombic [2Fe-2S] cluster (3). [3Fe-4S] (4) and [4Fe S] (5) clusters are characterized by distorted cubic symmetry (10,11).
