Other researchers suggest that organic precursors to life arrived on Earth aboard meteors or comets. Once here, these organic compounds arranged themselves into molecules that eventually led to the development of life. 

The analyses which follow are arranged in the order in which they would be applied to a newly discovered substance, the estimation of the elements present and molecular weight deter-minations(f.e., determination of empirical and molecular formulae respectively) coming first, then the estimation of particular groups in the molecule, and finally the estimation of special classes of organic compounds. It should be noted, however, that this systematic order differs considerably from the order of experimental difficulty of the individual analyses. Consequently many of the later macro-analyses, such as the estimation of hydroxyl groups, acetyl groups, urea, etc. may well be undertaken by elementary students, while the earlier analyses, such as estimation of elements present in the molecule, should be reserved for more senior students.

In electrocatalysis, the activated carbons, glassy carbon, and carbon black are the transitional forms used. Carbon black is the product of incomplete combustion or decomposition of organic compounds. The shape of its particles is close to spherical. They contain several carbon atom lattice fragments arranged without order. Various types of carbon black serve as substrates for metal catalysts, the properties of the carbon blacks themselves having a strong elfect on the catalytic activity of the combined catalysts thus obtained. 

Organic compounds with the same number of carbon atoms are grouped together, and arranged in order of the number of hydrogen atoms, with other atoms in alphabetical order. 

The molecules of two organic compounds are sometimes composed of the same type and number of atoms, but arranged in different ways. The molecular formula of each one of such compounds, which are known as isomers (for example, isoleucine and alloisoleucine, shown in Fig. 73), is therefore identical to that of the other only the structural formulas of the two isomers show the differences between their molecules (see Textbox 63).
