If we choose the oxygen 2s orbital for bonding and leave the 2symmetry point of view the opposite choice or a mixed orbital would do just as well actually if the two arbitals are close in energy, they mix), the MOs of the water molecule can be constructed as shown in Figure 6-18. These MOs are compared with the calculated contour diagrams of the water molecular orbitals in Figure 6-19. [Pg.268]

In VII, the metal atomic dyz and dzx orbitals are of SA and AS symmetries, respectively. A number of ligand distributions about the metal would leave these orbitals nonbonding with respect to the ligand bond network. In the trigonal prismatic complex VIII, for example, dyz and dzx are nonbonding and degenerate, exclusive of the two olefin ligands. [Pg.302]

Ibis hindered rotation of >f2-H2 is governed by various forces, which can be divided into bonded (electronic) and nonbonded interactions ( steric effects). The direct electronic interaction between M and H2 results from overlap of the appropriate molecular orbitals. Nonbonded interactions such as van der Waals forces between the q2-H2 atoms and the other atoms on the molecule may vary as 2- 2 rotates. Intermolecular interactions should not contribute much to the barrier to rotation of q2-H2, as the metals are far apart. However, they may have a minor effect on the coordination geometry about M, which could in turn affect M-H2 binding. [Pg.174]
