Optimization rigorous

The complexity of the biochemical pathways, certainly for antibiotic synthesis, means that the careful and rigorous selection of the microorganism is the key to obtaining higher titers. However, most microorganisms only show thek tme potential when cultured under optimal fermentation conditions. Of... [Pg.179]

Etom the customer s point of view, there is an optimal level of standardization. Increased standardization lowers costs but restricts choice. Furthermore, if a single minimal performance product standard is rigorously invoked in an industry, competition in a free market ultimately may lead the manufacturer of a superior product to save costs by lowering his product quaHty to the level of the standard, thus denying other values to the customer. Again, excessive standardization, especially as appHed to design or how the product performance is to be achieved, effectively can limit technological innovation. [Pg.21]

More rigorous techniques for optimizing outlet composition are described by ]-Halwagi and Manousiouthakis (1990b), Garrison cral, (1995), and Gupta and Manousiouthakis (1995) and is beyond the scope of this book. [Pg.133]

More rigorous techniques for optimizing outlet composition are described by Srinivas and El-Halwagi (1994). [Pg.233]

The optimal eontrol profiles identified by the solution of the non-linear programme were used to simulate the network through rigorous distributed parameter models on SPEEDUP to obtain a detailed deseription of its... [Pg.284]

Probability Theory.—To pursue our study of methods of operations research, a brief, although incomplete, and somewhat abstract, presentation of ideas from probability theory will be given. In part it shows that mathematical abstraction and rigor are also in the nature of operations research. Illustrations of this topic will be given in later sections. We then give a longer discussion of maximization and minimization methods and in turn illustrate the ideas in subsequent sections. Probability and statistics and optimization methods are two major sources of operations research tools. [Pg.266]

The Avrami—Erofe ev equation, eqn. (6), has been successfully used in kinetic analyses of many solid phase decomposition reactions examples are given in Chaps. 4 and 5. For no substance, however, has this expression been more comprehensively applied than in the decomposition of ammonium perchlorate. The value of n for the low temperature reaction of large crystals [268] is reduced at a 0.2 from 4 to 3, corresponding to the completion of nucleation. More recently, the same rate process has been the subject of a particularly detailed and rigorous re-analysis by Jacobs and Ng [452] who used a computer to optimize curve fitting. The main reaction (0.01 < a < 1.0) was well described by the exact Avrami equation, eqn. (4), and kinetic interpretation also included an examination of the rates of development and of multiplication of nuclei during the induction period (a < 0.01). The complete kinetic expressions required to describe quantitatively the overall reaction required a total of ten parameters. [Pg.59]

The results from the model were compared semi-quantitatively with experimental measurements to validate the model. Because of both the extremely long time constants in the system and the variations in the ambient conditions in the laboratory where the extruder was placed, it was not possible to rigorously test the model against experimental data. To conserve demands of time and materials for experiments on the extruder, numerical experiments were used to provide data for developing an optimal control system. The goal of the numerical experiments was to develop a reduced-order model suitable for optimizing the control system. [Pg.495]

Scale-up of microchannel reactors is based on using the optimal channel dimensions rather than seeking the smallest or the largest microchannel. In some cases, the channels may range from 100 pm in hydrauhc diameter to a few millimeters. The classification of a rigorous size range to designate a reactor as microchannel is not necessary. [Pg.240]
