Optical redshift

The BOLS correlation and the scaling relation correlate the size-created and stiffened LFR phonons to the intergrain interaction. The size-softened optical phonons result from interaction between the undercoordinated neighboring atoms in the skin. The coordination reduction enhancement of the phonon frequencies of the Eg mode of Ti02 and the G mode of GNR is dictated by the interaction between undercoordinated dimers. The size-induced phonon relaxation follows a K fashion. Decoding the size dependency of the Raman optical redshift leads to vibrational information of Si, InP, CdS, CdSe, TiOz, CeOa, and Sn02 dimers and their bulk shifts. [Pg.310]

The IRAS satellite mission, launched in 1983, provided a more complete survey of disk and active galaxies containing dust than had been possible from optical observations. Follow-up measurements of redshifts and other properties led to significant results for cosmology and the discovery of many luminous star-forming and active galaxies enshrouded by dust. A typical spiral galaxy like our own... [Pg.377]

Fig. 12.8. Plot of Zn abundance in DLAs vs. H i column density, for redshifts between 1.86 and 3.45. Symbols as in Fig. 12.7. The diagonal line, corresponding to logfVzn = 13.46, delimits an apparent zone of avoidance first noted from optically selected samples by Boiss6 et al. (1998) as modified by Prantzos and Boissier (2000). After Akerman et al. (2005). Fig. 12.8. Plot of Zn abundance in DLAs vs. H i column density, for redshifts between 1.86 and 3.45. Fig. 16.5 Response to refractive index interrogation of a single NOSA waveguide, (a) Output spectrum for a NOSA where one of the five resonators is fluidically targeted, first with water and then with a CaCl2 solution. The resonance of the targeted resonator shifts toward the red end of the spectrum due to the higher refractive index of the CaCl2 solution, (b) Experimental data (with error bars indicating inter device variability) showing the redshifts for various refractive index solutions. The solid line is the theoretically predicted redshift from FDTD simulations. The experimental data is in excellent agreement with the theory. Chemical Control. The formation of mixed chalcogenide/mixed metal semiconductors is another way of fine tuning optical spectra. For example, exposure of CdS in ArH films to H2Se resulted in a redshifting in the absorbance spectrum of CdS attributed to the formation of CdS,Se species (60). XPS results revealed that after... [Pg.269]

In X-rays, detections of such distant structures are easier because they appear as extended sources and because the field is not providing such extended sources at these wavelengths in general. The contamination by field X-rays point sources is, however, sometimes very strong. Another problem is to measure the precise redshift of these extended sources at the same time. In any case, optical observations are needed to complete X-ray observations in order to confirm the nature of the source and to estimate its redshift. [Pg.43]

The main limitation of the previous method is the time needed to detect (and to treat) optical spectroscopic data. A possible solution to this problem is to use photometric redshifts. Using five bands observed in photometry only (for example from the B to the J band) allows robust galaxy redshift determinations... [Pg.46]
