The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana), a member of the Didel-phidae or American opossums, is the only native North American marsupial. This species has probably been utilized more than any other marsupial for behavioral studies (Kirkby, 1977). There are also a number of didelphids in South America, although very little has been known heretofore about the ecology or behavior of these South American forms (Streilein, 1982).
