Sternal gland

In the sternal gland secretion of males oiAleochara curtula, 1-methylethyl (Z)-9-hexadecenoate was identified. The compound was attractive to males and females and acts as an aggregation pheromone [113]. [Pg.115]

In the Madera cockroach, Leucophaea maderae, male calling behavior involves the release of a sex pheromone from the abdominal sternal glands. The extracts of sternal glands attracted conspecific females over a distance and the compounds responsible were identified as hydroxy-3-butan-2-one, (27 , 37 )-butanediol, senecioic acid and ( )-2-octenoic acid. The same components are also present in the male tergal glands. [Pg.291]

Regulation of the maturational stage of pheromone gland differentiation in the adult is better understood. Before day-5 the immature sternal glands of N. cinerea males contain numerous pycnotic nuclei (from the dying enveloping and... [Pg.294]

Samples from the sternal gland secretion were collected by rubbing a piece of filter paper over the sternal region. Each sample was later analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) utilizing a method which was established previously for the brushtail possum (Salamon, 1994). [Pg.90]
