In a similar study, chicken eggs were injected with emetine dihydrochloride (20-25 mg) and placed along three transects, 0.7 to 1.0 km long. Raccoons, opossums, Didelphis virginiana, and striped skunks consumed 75% less treated eggs than untreated controls if the animals were first conditioned and untreated eggs... [Pg.413]

In Brazil, Ezequiel Dias in 1933 was the first to officially describe the oral transmission mode of Chagas disease. He observed armadillos feeding on the insect P. megistus in his laboratory. This researcher also confirmed the importance of the transmission of the protozoa to cats that fed on infected insects and mice (Ribeiro et al., 1987). Additionally, Ribeiro et al. (1987) described the infection of several opossums (Didelphis albiven-tris) by oral means by feeding them either on infected triatomines or on mice experimentally infected by T. cruzi. Souza et al. (1997) infected mice by oral administration of blood samples contaminated with T. cruzi. [Pg.71]

The American or common opossum Didelphis wior-supialis) is the only member of the order Marsupialia to occur naturally in North America. The American opossum occurs from southern Ontario through to most of South America. The only other member of its genus is D. azarae, which occurs through much of South America. However, other genera and species of the family Didelphidae, the New World opossums, occur in Central and South America. [Pg.656]
