Open ends Plug flow

The Monsanto hollow-fiber module Tor gas separation appears to be a compromise between the two preceding reverse osmosis module designs/ As shown in Fig, 20. [-4, the hollow fibers are closed at one and with an epoxy plug or similar devioe, and Teed enters at the side at one end, The feed then flows axially along Ibe fibers, and (he nor permeant exits at the opposite end from which the feed eaters. Permeant diffusing through the hollow-fiber wall into the bora moves con me (currently to the shell-side flow and unimeieiy is collected in the chamber where all the open ends of (he fibers terminate,... [Pg.866]

To predict the response curve to an ideal pulse tracer injection at the entrance of the tubular reactor, the boundary conditions at both ends have to be known. Suppose the flow is undisturbed as it passes the inlet and the outlet boundaries of the reactor. This situation is depicted in Figure 3.11a and called an open/open system to dispersion. In contrary to this situation, ideal plug flow D = 0) is considered outside of the boundaries as illustrated in Figure 3.11b. A sudden change of the axial dispersion occurs at the inlet and the outlet of the reactor. This situation corresponds to a closed/closed system. In addition to these situations, vessels open for dispersion at only one site can be discussed. [Pg.102]

A plug of molecules of the same kind moving under the flow of the mobile phase and in equilibrium with a stationary phase will require a volume of mobile phase Vr to be washed from one end of a separator to the other. A packed tube (or column) full of particles has an open total volume occupied by mobile phase. If there is no equilibrium—if the equilibrium constant is K — 0—it is void volume that is required for an infinitely narrow plug through the system. It is more common to define that volume V0 as the volume here half the plug has eluted. If K is finite and non-zero, the net effect is for the plug to move more slowly and for it to take a volume larger than V0 to achieve elution. [Pg.411]

The interface with the process at the other end of the control loop is made by the final control element. In a vast majority of chemical engineering processes the final control element is an automatic control valve which throttles the flow of a manipulated variable. Most control valves consist of a plug on the end of a stem that opens or closes an orifice opening as the stem is raised or lowered. As sketched in Fig. 7.5, the stem is attached to a diaphragm that is driven by changing air pressure above the diaphragm. The force of the air pressure is opposed by a spring. [Pg.213]

If flow is completely blocked, you will have to open the column, remove the frit, and bore out the plug with a flat ended spatula. Be very careful, the plug is generally only 1-2 mm deep. The packing can be washed with solvent or water, drained, and pasted back into the column like you are healing an end-void. [Pg.82]

Where conditions are such that it is impractical to measure static pressure at the wall, a combined pitot-static tube may be used. This is actually two tubes, one inside the other. The outer tube is plugged off at the end facing the flowing fluid, but small holes are drilled through it to receive the fluid pressure. These holes open into the annular space between the tubes. The static pressure is measured through two or more of these holes, and it is assumed that the flow follows along the outside of the tube in such a way that the true static pressure is obtained. [Pg.428]

Platelet participation in normal hemostasis. The hemostatic plug is the specific response to external vessel lesion and depends on the extent of vessel wall damage, the specific interaction between endothelial cells and activated platelets, release of the contents of platelets intracellular granules in response to activation, the conjoint activity of activated factor Vll and platelet agonists, and the open conditions of blood flow. After activation, platelets also produce the external ization of membrane phosphatidylserine through the flip-flop mechanism that will support the function of the prothrombinase complex ending in thrombin generation and local clot formation. [Pg.36]

Achieving identical flow in each charmel can be difficult at low flow rates. A careful analysis of fhe hydrod)mamic sfabilify teaches that a monolith system is intrinsically unstable in cocurrent upflow. Conversely, cocurrent downflow is sfable when fhe flow velocity exceeds a critical value. A first approximation of fhe crifical flow velocify is fhe velocity that a liquid plug has when it falls under fhe influence of gravity inside the channel when it is open to the atmosphere at both ends. [Pg.268]

The ceramic wall-flow filter is an innovative extension of the extruded honeycomb catalyst support described in Chapter 2. This filter concept, shown in Fig. 5. involves having the alternate cell openings on one end of the unit plugged in checkerboard fashion. The... [Pg.506]

Consider a typical pneumatic valve like that of Figure 11A.3. The position of the stem (or, equivalently, of the plug at the end of the stem) will determine the size of the opening for flow and consequently the size of the flow (flow rate). The position of the stem is determined by the balance of all forces acting on it. These forces are ... [Pg.115]
