In order to save the cost of the distilling-flask (which after the above treatment is useless for further work), the mixture may be distilled from a small retort made by blowing a suitable bulb on the end of a rather thick-walled tube of about 8-10 mm. internal diameter the tube is then bent through almost 90° a few cm. above the bulb, cut to a suitable length, and the Open end fitted into the boiling ube as before. 

Microstrainers. Microstrainers are rotating steel screens with extremely fine stainless steel mesh (85—170 perforations per square centimeter (13—26/in. )). The flowing Hquid enters the open end of the dmm and passes through the mesh to the effluent end. The mesh traps soHd impurities and rotates with the dmm. A wash-water spray washes the trapped soHds into a hopper for final disposal. The mesh is washed with filtered effluent discharged from jets fitted into the dmm and then exposed to uv radiation to inhibit microbial growth. The mesh is washed with chlorine water at intervals of 7 to 28 days in order to control slime growth removal efficiencies are 30—55% of the appHed BOD and 40—60% of suspended soHds. 

However, it is not always possible to run a pilot-plant test in order to determine the depth of cut. A well-accepted alternative approach makes use of the more sophisticated test leaf illustrated in Fig. 18-97. Semi-open formulas are used when the problem exists at only one limit. At the closed end of the integration, the weights from the standard closed-type formulas are used and at the open end, the weights from open formulas are used. (Weights for closed and open formulas of various orders of error may be found in standard numerical methods texts.) The term collectivism has sometimes been used to distinguish this AL philosophy from the more traditional top down and bottom up philosophies. Collectivism embodies the belief that in order to properly understand complex systems, such systems must be viewed as coherent wholes whose open-ended evolution is continuously fueled by nonlinear feedback between their macroscopic states and microscopic constituents. It is neither completely reductionist (which seeks only to decompose a system into its primitive components), nor completely synthesist (which seeks to synthesize the system out of its constituent parts but neglects the feedback between emerging levels). 

As a last illustration, return to the original problem of Figure 1 and ask how much time the family in the suite has, if they are to be able to safely run at 1.65 m/sec to exit at the open end of the corridor. In order to run, the program HAZARD assumes that the hot-cold interface is at least 1.2 meters from the floor. The latest they could leave the suite is at 160 seconds following the dashed line F-F in Figure 6.

In a response to an open ended question on why doctors report, the following were given as the main reasons, in order of frequency ... 

A 25-cm long piece of lead tube is closed at one end by means of a wooden mallet and filled with a pyrotechnic formulation. The tube is tapped on a firm base while filling until it is filled completely. Then the open end is closed with a wooden mallet.
