One Reality

The working esoteric tradition of the West is often referred to as the Mysteries. The term mystery is used in the theological sense, where a mystery is a spiritual reality that transcends normal reasoning. The ultimate goal of the Mysteries is divinization our complete and utter identification with the All-That-ls, the One Reality. In many Eastern traditions, this is called enlightenment. In the Western tradition, it is called illumination. [Pg.5]

Although a diatomic molecule can produce only one vibration, this number increases with the number of atoms making up the molecule. For a molecule of N atoms, 3N-6 vibrations are possible. The separation of two surfaces in contact is resisted by adhesive forces. As the nonnal force is decreased, the contact regions pass from conditions of compressive to tensile stress. As revealed by JKR theory, surface tension alone is sufficient to ensure that there is a finite contact area between the two at zero nonnal force. One contribution to adhesion is the work that must be done to increase surface area during separation. If the surfaces have undergone plastic defonnation, the contact area will be even greater at zero nonnal force than predicted by JKR theory. John von Neuman, one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century, believed that the sciences, in essence, do not try to explain, they hardly even try to interpret they mainly make models. By a model he meant a mathematical construct that, with the addition of certain verbal interpretations, describes observed phenomena. The justification of such a mathematical construct is solely and precisely that it is expected to work. Stephen Hawking also believes that physical theories are just mathematical models we construct and that it is meaningless to ask whether they correspond to reality, just as it is to ask whether they predict observations. [Pg.10]

This discussion may well leave one wondering what role reality plays in computation chemistry. Only some things are known exactly. For example, the quantum mechanical description of the hydrogen atom matches the observed spectrum as accurately as any experiment ever done. If an approximation is used, one must ask how accurate an answer should be. Computations of the energetics of molecules and reactions often attempt to attain what is called chemical accuracy, meaning an error of less than about 1 kcal/mol. This is suf-hcient to describe van der Waals interactions, the weakest interaction considered to affect most chemistry. Most chemists have no use for answers more accurate than this. [Pg.3]

A few studies have found potential surfaces with a stable minimum at the transition point, with two very small barriers then going toward the reactants and products. This phenomenon is referred to as Lake Eyring Henry Eyring, one of the inventors of transition state theory, suggested that such a situation, analogous to a lake in a mountain cleft, could occur. In a study by Schlegel and coworkers, it was determined that this energy minimum can occur as an artifact of the MP2 wave function. This was found to be a mathematical quirk of the MP2 wave function, and to a lesser extent MP3, that does not correspond to reality. The same effect was not observed for MP4 or any other levels of theory. [Pg.151]
