Olds, James

One year later, 22-year-old James Watson completed his Ph.D. studies on bacterial viruses at Indiana University and began postdoctoral research in biochemistry in Copenhagen. After a year at Copenhagen, Watson decided Cambridge was the place to be. [Pg.1167]

Tough job, isn t it But as Hemingway taught us in his books and Fleming summed it up in his haiku in the novel You Only Live Twice, your second life begins only when you ve faced death. In a way, when good old James Bond faces death, he s reminding us not to waste any moment of our lives. [Pg.159]

James Chadwick was happy to return to England in 1917. He had been studying in Germany at the outbreak of World War 1 and had been imprisoned there for four years. He was broke but alive. Fortunately, his old mentor Ernest Rutherford took him in. His job was to search for the neutral particle that Rutherford believed must exist in the atomic nucleus, a particle he called a neutron. [Pg.32]

Sickle cells were first identified by physician James Herrick in a 20-year-old medical student from Grenada in 1910.1 O Sickle cell syndrome refers to a collection of autosomal recessive genetic disorders that are characterized by the presence of at least one sickle hemoglobin gene (HbS).2,3... [Pg.1003]

Of Frankland s many teachers, only James Willasey taught science or encouraged Frankland s obvious abilities. Deeply grateful all his life, Frankland regarded Willasey as a real educator and raised an annuity to support him in old age. Willasey in turn willed all his possessions to Frankland, who proudly wore his teacher s seal on a watch fob. [Pg.45]

In 1928, the English scientist and idealist Sir James Jean revived the old heat death argument, augmented with elements from Einstein s relativity theory since matter and energy are equivalents, he claimed, the universe must finally end up in the complete conversion of matter into energy ... [Pg.136]

Many steam car developers did not get beyond building a few hundred or thousands units, but many of the early gasoline car pioneers became major manufacturers. Gottlieb Daimler, Henry Ford, Ransom Olds, Carl Benz, William Durant (General Motors founder), James Packard and John Studebaker are a few who played important roles in the early years of autos. [Pg.149]

Why this emphasis Schweber has portrayed Slater as a man who developed a deep feeling of both inferiority and competitiveness toward his European mentors and peers in the fields of atomic physics and quantum electrodynamics. Slater was not alone in this reaction, as Henry James made clear. Slater, like other American physicists and chemists, used his influence in Boston, New York, and Washington circles, as well as his position within his own institution, to build up American science in an area where Americans could take a competitive lead. 107 Donnan had written Lewis in 1921 that "you are making old Europe sit up some. If it wasn t for Planck, Einstein, Rutherford, and Bragg, we should be in a bad way." 108 But it was not enough for Europeans to sit up "some" they must be made to gawk. [Pg.269]

Carlos s and James s ages are consecutive integers. James is older. Four years ago, Carlos was half the age that James is now. How old is James now ... [Pg.267]

Find the middle age among the answer choices. The middle age is choice c, 8 years. If James is 8 now, Carlos is 7 now. Four years ago, Carlos was 7-4 = 3 years old. This is not one half of 7. Try choice... [Pg.267]

Thomas Charnock was bom at Faversham (Kent), either in the year 1524 or in 1526. After some travels over England he settled at Oxford, carrying on experiments in Alchemy. In 1557 he wrote his Breviary of Philosophy. This work is almost entirely autobiographical, describing Chamock s alchemistic experiences. He tells us that he was initiated into the mysteries of the Hermetic Art by a certain James S. of Salisbury he also had another master, an old blind man, who on his death-bed instmcted Charnock. [Pg.52]

Alkylation of benzene is old technology. The French chemist, Charles Friedel, with his American partner, James Crafts, in 1877, stumbled (almost literally) across the technique for alkylating benzene with amyl chloride (C5H11CI). The use of a metallic catalyst, in this case aluminum, was the key. The Friedel-Crafts reaction is classical and remains a principal route for alkylating benzene with ethylene to make EB. [Pg.120]
