Edwin Drake drilled the first oil well in Pennsylvania in 1859 to use extracted oil as a substitute for whale oil—the main lighting source and feedstock for consumer and chemical products then. This resource was hazardous to get and dwindling due to heavy exploitation, as it happens currently with oil. Petroleum presented many advantages over whale oil and solved a great deal of ecological and resource security problems associated with the old resource. Nevertheless, after a century and a half of use, petroleum has created new problems related to environmental pollution and energy security [1]. [Pg.536]

Thus, in the distillation of crude petroleum, light naphtha and gases are removed as vapor from the top of the tower, heavy naphtha, kerosene, and gas oil are removed as sidestream products, and reduced crude (atmospheric residuum) is taken from the bottom of the tower. [Pg.44]

The cooled coke-oven gas then passes to the light oil absorber, where benzene, toluene, xylene, and higher aromatics are scrubbed from the gas using a wash oil. The light oil is recovered from the wash oil in a fractionator. The crude light oil can either be sold, or it can be refined to recover individual aromatics, such as benzene. In the past, coke-oven gas was an important source of aromatic compounds, but now they can be more cheaply obtained from petroleum. [Pg.869]
