Polybutenes have heen used for almost a century and while they are still used, most of this type sealant contains butyl rubber, which is a copolymer of butene and isoprene. Most building specifications, including Federal Specification, TT-S-001637, require solutions of butyl rubber instead of oil-based caulking compositions. High quality, conventional sealants (118) will dominate the industries in the 80 s. Energy-efficient, water-proof, and durable sealants will be in demand by the construction and automotive industries. Commonly used sealants are polysulfides, polyurethanes, silicones, oil-based caulks, butyls, and solvent or latex acrylics. These materials, also called oil-based caulking compounds, contain 15-20% blown or heatbodied vegetable oil, usually soya, plus 5-8% fatty acids and polybutenes. Since these latter polymers do not harden on aging, they prevent embrittlement of the compound. Oil based caulking compounds are supplied in knife and gun grades. Gun grades are viscous semiliquids whereas knife grades are more viscous and are similar to mortar in consistency. A simple linseed oil putty has a composition of 12 parts oil and 88 parts calcium carbonate filler. The sealants can be appUed at temperatures between 40 to 100°F (4 to 38°C). Below 40°F, the viscosity becomes too high for easy working, and above 100°F, the viscosity drops sufficiently for sagging to occur. [Pg.303]
