Sulfur in crude oils is mainly present in the form of organosulfur compounds. Hydrogen sulfide is the only important inorganic sulfur compound found in crude oil. Its presence, however, is harmful because of its corrosive nature. Organosulfur compounds may generally be classified as acidic and non-acidic. Acidic sulfur compounds are the thiols (mercap-tans). Thiophene, sulfides, and disulfides are examples of non-acidic sulfur compounds found in crude fractions. Extensive research has been carried out to identify some sulfur compounds in a narrow light petroleum fraction.Examples of some sulfur compounds from the two types are ... [Pg.15]

The demand for environment-friendly fuels requires the removal of organosulfur compounds present in crade-oil fractions. SO2 or SO3 contribute to the formation of acid rain and have an effect on pollution control devices [9]. Very stringent environmental regulations will limit the sulfur levels in diesel fuels in EU to less than 10 ppm by the end of 2010 [10]. The conventional sulfur-compound... [Pg.145]

Other Rhodococcus strains similar to those described above in terms of the desulfurization ability have also been isolated [83], The purpose of identifying such Rhodococcus strains, in several cases, appears to be the development of in-house biocatalysts for BDS application. The specificity of the desulfurizing strains of organosulfur compounds in addition to DBT has also been studied (Table 3). [Pg.78]
