Nylon chemical formula

Hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) is a colorless solid when pure, but it slowly degrades to colored products when it contacts air. It is commercially available as the anhydrous product or in aqueous solutions. In 2003 it had a global capacity that was approaching 3.0 billion pounds per year, and it was made by only one main route hydrogenation of ADN. Commercially the most important use of HMDA is in a polycondensation reaction with adipic acid to eventually give nylon 6,6274. The chemical formula for HMDA is ... [Pg.392]

Pyrolysis of nylon 6 generates a significant proportion of caprolactam, which can be considered the monomer. The cleavage of the peptide bond explains easily the formation of the monomer. The molecules of polymers have a spatial arrangement and do not have a linear form as typically indicated with planar chemical formulas (see also Section 1.3). The idealized spatial form for the molecule of nylon 6 is suggested below ... [Pg.599]

The important consequence of the polycondensation reaction is that the chain can only consist of DCH2CH20 units joined to -(-CO)— —(CO units in an alternating sequence. The single bonds along the backbone of the molecule are not collinear as shown in the chemical formula above, but it is nevertheless possible for the chain to acquire translational symmetry by suitable rotations aroxmd them and, for this molecule, the chemical and translational repeat units are the same. Another example is a polyamide such as nylon-6,6 (Bri-nylon)... [Pg.89]

The polyamides (PAs) are commonly known as nylons. They are linear molecules with a high degree of crystallinity and have the following formulas, as shown in Figure 8.1. As can be seen from the chemical formulas, there are a variety of polyamides available. Shown are the varieties that are used for corrosion resistance. The nylons are resistant to UV degradation, weathering, and ozone. However, all nylons will absorb some moisture from environmental humidity. This can have an effect on the dimensional stability of a part. [Pg.123]

FE The chemical composition of the repeat unit O for nylon 6,6 is given by the formula C12H22N2O2. Atomic weights for the constituent elements are Ac = 12, Ah = 1, Ah = 14, and Aq = 16. According to this chemical formula (for nylon 6,6), the percentage (by weight) of carbon in nylon 6,6 is most nearly... [Pg.50]

One very important chemical activity is the synthesis of new substances. Nylon, the artificial sweetener aspartame (Nutra-Sweet ), Kevlar used in bulletproof vests and the body parts of exotic cars, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for plastic water pipes. Teflon, Nitinol (the alloy that remembers its shape even after being severely distorted), and so many other materials that make our lives easier—all originated in some chemist s laboratory. Some of the new materials have truly amazing properties such as the plastic that listens and talks, described in the Chemistry in Focus on page 213. When a chemist makes a new substance, the first order of business is to identify it. What is its composition What is its chemical formula ... [Pg.211]

There a number of opinions on how RFL functions with rayon and nylon. Rayon contains active OH groups on its polymer chain while nylon contains amide groups (CONH). Moult suggests the formula in Fig. 10 for adhering of RFL to rayon. A similar possibility could exist with nylon. He suggests a chemical reaction between the methylol groups on the RF molecule and the active hydrogens on both rayon and nylon. [Pg.586]
