Numerical goals

Goals can be either numerical or descriptive. Numerical goals, as the name implies, are goals that can be measured in the form of numbers— for example, a goal of zero hazards at any time.  [Pg.83]

Numerical goals have the advantage of being easy to measure. It is difficult to set a numerical goal that is both attainable and comprehensive enough to serve as a milestone for your journey. For example, if you set a goal of zero hazards at any time or an OIR of 5.0, it may be difficult to reach. You and your employees will become disillusioned long before you have a chance to reach your destination [3]. [Pg.83]

You could set a goal of a certain number of injuries. However, in doing so you ignore both illnesses and those existing hazards that have not yet resulted in an injury— for example, a near miss or other loss-producing events. [Pg.83]

Descriptive goals are not numerical, but can also be sufficiently inclusive and still attainable—for example, a comprehensive program that assesses all existing and known potential hazards of your workplace and prevents or controls these hazards [3]. [Pg.84]

Eliminate work standard and numerical targets. Eliminate management by objectives and by numerical goal. The focus should be on quality rather than on quantity. [Pg.137]

As Brand Zero becomes more prominent it also becomes more complex, as managers and supervisors on site struggle to implement its stark numerical goal with the realities in which they work every day. [Pg.160]

Substitute leadership Eliminate management by objective, by numbers, and numerical goals. [Pg.812]

Change rewards. Eliminate work standards (quotas) on the factory floor. Stop the focus on management by objective. Do not align management by numbers and numerical goals. Remove barriers that rob a production worker of their right to have pride of workmanship. [Pg.168]

Many companies still use incident rates (numerical goals) as calculated from their OSHA log. Sometimes, this is all that an organization knows. Although there is widespread use of this measurement, consider these facts ... [Pg.84]

Eliminate numerical quotas for the work force and numerical goals for management. Eliminate posting goals for the employees. Keep this as an internal measurement exclusively for management. Review trends regularly. [Pg.324]

In that context, the expected outcome of the application of a leading indicator would be identified and declared and, in an appropriate time, be subjected to a cause-and-effect test. For example, assume that 5 million is to be spent on defined sales promotion initiatives and the goal established is to increase market share by 20 million. At a later date, the hypothesis test would determine whether the numerical goal for increased market share was or was not reached. If not, the premises on which the expenditure proposal was based could be called into question due to a lack of a positive cause-and-effect relationship. [Pg.288]

Numerical goals have the advantage of being easy to measure. Numerical goals require a full assessment of the time, resources, and budget if they are to be both attainable and... [Pg.311]
