Nuclear energy uranium metal

In plutonium-fueled breeder power reactors, more plutonium is produced than is consumed (see Nuclearreactors, reactor types). Thus the utilisa tion of plutonium as a nuclear energy or weapon source is especially attractive to countries that do not have uranium-enrichment faciUties. The cost of a chemical reprocessing plant for plutonium production is much less than that of a uranium-235 enrichment plant (see Uranium and uranium compounds). Since the end of the Cold War, the potential surplus of Pu metal recovered from the dismantling of nuclear weapons has presented a large risk from a security standpoint. [Pg.191]

Before 1942 uranium was said to have no important uses—it was used mainly to gi5 e a greenish-yellow color to glass and glazes. In 1942, hotvever, exactly one hundred years after the metal was first isolated, uranium became one of the most important of all elements. It was discovered in that year that uranium could be made a source of nuclear energy, liberated in tremendous quantity at the will of man. [Pg.524]

Controlled-potential coulometric methods have been used to determine more than 55 elements in inorganic compounds. Mercury is a popular cathode methods have been described for the deposition of more than two dozen metals at this electrode. The method has found use in the nuclear-energy field for the relatively interference-free determination of uranium and plutonium. [Pg.653]

Controlled-potential coulometric methods have been applied to more than fifty elements in inorganic com-pounds. Historically, mercury was widely used as the working electrode material, and methods for the deposition of two dozen or more metals at this electrode have been described. In recent years, many other electrode materials have been used, including platinum and various forms of carbon. Coulometry is used widely in the nuclear energy field for the relatively interference-free determination of uranium and plutonium. For example, the uranium-to-oxygen ratio in spent nuclear fuel has been determined by controlled-potential coulometry with a precision of 0.06% relative standard deviation (RSD). ... [Pg.361]

All liquid metal cooled SMRs are fast reactors that can ensure a self-sustainable operation on fissile materials or realize fuel breeding to feed other reactors present in nuclear energy systems. In both cases, and if the fuel cycle is closed, the need of fuel enrichment and relevant uranium enrichment facilities would be eliminated, which is reasonably mentioned as a factor contributing to enhanced proliferation resistance. [Pg.48]
