Nuclear Decommissioning Authority

Since the formation of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) there has been an emphasis on a demonstrable process for prioritisation of remediation work on UK decommissioning sites. As part of this process, the HI has now been re-named the Radiological Hazard Potential (RHP) and is one of five metrics which are combined numerically to produce a prioritisation metric, the Safety and Environmental Detriment (SED), see below. This paper relates only to the RHP. It is a quantitative measure of the potential for a material or plant item to cause harm, but does not address the risk of that harm occurring and has universal application irrespective of facility type.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is a non-departmental public body, set up in April 2005 by the UK Government under the Energy Act 2004 to take strategic responsibility for the UK s nuclear legacy.

The manuscript has been approved for publication by Magnox Limited and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. 

Eleven sites have been nominated by either possible operators or the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) under the SSA process the sites are listed and details provided in the Draft National Policy Statement for Nuclear Power Generation (Reference 3.5). Of these sites, nine are located adj acent to existing nuclear power stations (either operational or in a decommissioning phase). The other two nominated sites are located on the west coast of Cumbria, i.e., within the wider locality of Sellafield.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority intervenes by offering a contract which includes a payment transfer that encourages companies to jointly contribute to risk reduction.

Bringing all this research effort together to build a comprehensive safety case for the final repository, one that reflects best practice from around the world, is one of the tasks assigned to a new organisation. Radioactive Waste Management. RWM was created in April 2014 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). It builds on the work of the NDA s former Radioactive Waste Management Directorate.
