Samples must be carefully labeled as they are taken. Labels must tell where, when, and how they were taken and include reference to the field notebook page where they are described. One other effective method of labeling is to use bar codes for each sample. This facilitates sample handling and decreases misidentification of samples. The organization must have a well-documented audit trail to raw data that will facilitate the retrieval of any supporting data that may be required during a regulatory inspection. In case of any off-site inspection, it may be prudent to include a copy of all notebook pages and all raw data. [Pg.177]

Different organizations have different formats for the record of invention (i.e., invention disclosure) but some common threads include a brief description of the invention, key dates including conception and reduction to practice, references to key notebook pages, and a list of proposed inventors and their contact information. Without a doubt, somebody reading this book today is going to make an important discovery in the future and will seek a patent. The lab notebook is your legal record of your discovery. Therefore each notebook page should be signed and dated. Anything of potential importance should also be signed and dated by a second person. [Pg.36]

When you begin the actual experiment, keep your notebook nearby so you will be able to record those operations you perform. When you are working in the laboratory, the notebook serves as a place in which to record a rough transcript of your experimental method. Data from actual weighings, volume measurements, and determinations of physical consfants are also noted. This section of your notebook should not be prepared in advance. The purpose is not to write a recipe but rather to record what you did and what you observed. These observations will help you write reports without resorting to memory. They will also help you or other workers repeat the experiment in as nearly as possible the same way. The sample notebook pages found in Figures 2.2 and 2.3 illustrate the type of data and observations that should be written in your notebook. [Pg.595]
