Nonessential cell processes

There are approximately 20 amino acids in use in our body, but 10 of these are the essential amino acids and these must be taken in from food as our bodies are not able to synthesize them. The 10 nonessential, but still important, amino acids can be synthesized from proteins. These amino acids are synthesized by the cells of the body by a process called trans-amination , i.e. the body uses the amino groups from unwanted proteins to make the ones it needs. [Pg.80]

Specific transport systems are most likely present in the plasmalemma of the mammalian cell to efficiently channel circulating amino acids into the cell interior. Inside the cell, amino acids are involved in a variety of metabolic processes. A substantial part of the amino acids is used for the protein synthesis that takes place in all mammalian cells with the exception of red blood cells. It is important to realize that protein synthesis only occurs when all amino acid precursors, that is, both essential and nonessential amino acids, are present in adequate amounts. When one... [Pg.68]

Plant cells produce far more chemical compounds than is necessary for their basic functions i.e., biochemical pathways for survival and propagation. Basic or primary metabolism refers to all biochemical processes for the normal anabolic and catabolic pathways, which result in assimilation, respiration, transport, and differentiation. Basic or primary metabolism is shared by all cells, while secondary metabolism generates diverse and seemingly less essential or nonessential byproducts called secondary products. The secondary products are the colors, flavors, and smells, which are the sources of fine chemicals such as drugs, insecticides, dyes, flavors, and fragrances, and plant-growth regulators found in medicinal plants. [Pg.591]
