Nomenclature Search

Structure and Nomenclature Search System. This system links the collection of chemical databases found in the Chemical Information System (CIS), one of the first interactive systems for stmcture and substmcture searching. References from the separate files can be retrieved by SANSS using CAS Registry Numbers, and the database of stmctures may be searched for stmctures or substmctures. An adaptation of the SANSS software for substmcture searching has been incorporated in the Dmg Information System of the National Cancer Institute for its own use (54).

NRC/U.S. Coast Guard coordinate numerous information services, systems, and centers to assist in emergency response. Included are the Marine Safety Information Center, Hazard Assessment Control System, Chemical Hazard Response Information System, Oil and Hazardous Materials-Technical Assistance Data System, Structural and Nomenclature Search System, and Pollution Equipment Inventory System. 

All atoms were drawn with whatever atom symbol had last been selected. To select an atom symbol the user touched the LABEL ATOM menu item, which caused a secondary menu of atom symbols to appear at the bottom of the screen in the message area previously reserved. The list was chosen by frequency of appearance in organic compounds as determined by an examination of compounds in the Structure and Nomenclature Search System (a component of The Chemical Information System). Similarly, bonds were drawn using the last selected bond type. 

The Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS) is published annually by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Ohio). The computerized version, which contains data on over 40000 compounds, is available via the TOXLINE system of the US National Library of Medicine and the Chemical Information Service (CIS), sponsored jointly by the National Institutes of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency, Washington. Within CIS there exists also a powerful structural search system known as SANSS (Structure and Nomenclature Search System) which provides... 

The CAS Registry System contains not only the Registry File for structural data, but also the Nomenclature File, containing CA index names and synonyms, which may be other systematic names, common names, trade names, etc. (see Nomenclature Searching and Nomenclature Automatic Generation and Conversion) Currency, there are over 24 million chemical names in the Registry System. 

A prominent example of a structure database (see Structure Databases) is the REGISTRY File offered by the host STN. This database contains both structure and nomenclature from the Registry System. This file is searched using the Messenger software developed by Chemical Abstracts Service, which provides both identity, full structure, and substructure searching as well as nomenclature searching (see Chemical Abstracts Service Information System). As chemical substance names are text, they are amenable to searching using a variety of text-searching methods. The methods for nomenclature searching are found in many textsearching systems. A knowledge of both the search methods and nomenclature rules permits a swift, meaningful search of chemical substance names. A search can be performed for full structure, substructures or chemical substances of unknown or variable composition.

Complete-match methods are extremely useful in nomenclature searching. There are many ways to achieve this benefit but the basic proposition is that it is imperative to search for terms that are complete names in themselves and not derived from some larger name. For example, benzene could be a search term that is part of a larger systematic name or it could be the complete name of a chemical substance. Differentiating between these possibilities is essential. 

It is not important to pay attention to this level of detail for the vast majority of nomenclature searches. For completeness of search and where physical or chemical properties may be the object of the nomenclature search, it is important to consider how to include these descriptors in nomenclature searching. 

Source-based polymer representation (also called product-by-process representation ) the polymer is represented in terms of the names (see Nomenclature Searching) and structures (where known) of the substance(s) from which the polymer was formed. For example, polyethylene is represented by the expression (CH2=CH2)x, because the structure of the monomer, ethylene, from which it is made is CH2=CH2.
