Drug nomenclature

The generic name of a drug is not directly de rived from systematic nomenclature Furthermore different pharmaceutical companies will call the same drug by their own trade name which is differ ent from its generic name Generic names are in vented on request (for a fee) by the U S Adopted Names Council a private organization founded by the American Medical Association the American Pharmaceutical Association and the U S Pharma copeial Convention... 

The increased speed of structure determination necessary for the structural genomics projects makes an independent validation of the structures (by comparison to expected properties) particularly important. Structure validation helps to correct obvious errors (e.g. in the covalent structure) and leads to a more standardised representation of structural data, e.g. by agreeing on a common atom name nomenclature. The knowledge of the structure quality is a prerequisite for further use of the structure, e.g. in molecular modelling or drug design. 

Assist in Standardization of Nomenclature. The profusion of trade names, initials, numbers, and combinations thereof for pesticides contributes to misuse and errors in the handling of these preparations. The coining of common or generic names for pesticides is a recent and commendable innovation in this field of science. It presents many problems which require the services of many groups. The many years of experience of the Council on Pharmacy and Chemistry in the development of generic names for drugs is at the disposal of the committee in its consideration of nomenclature problems. 

The intense need for herbal information in response to consumer interest in natural products was an acute reminder that information and knowledge generated locally have an international role. Confusion created by multiple names and unreliable nomenclature and classification of natural products mirrors problems encountered with drug nomenclature in the 1960s. Our information deficit in this area is still large. Chapter 24 presents a discussion of natural products.

The polar character of the liposomal core makes the encapsulation of polar drug molecules possible. Amphiphilic and lipophilic molecules are solubilized within the phospholipid bilayer according to their affinity toward the phospholipids. Participation of nonionic surfactants instead of phospholipids in the bilayer formation results in Niosomes . The term sphingosomes is suggested for vesicles from sphingolipids. However, the nomenclature is not consistent, and the term liposomes is used as a general term, although vesicles would be the better choice. 

Thus, the natural oestrogen estrone can be converted into the drug ethinylestradiol by nucleophilic addition. Ethinylestradiol is some 12 times more effective than estradiol when taken orally, and is widely used in oral contraceptive preparations. In drug nomenclature, the systematic name ethynyl- for the HC=C- group is usually presented as ethinyl-. 

Nomenclature. The terms active agent and pharmacon designate substances that are capable of modifying life processes irrespective of whether the effects elicited may benefit or harm the organisms concerned. By this definition, a toxin is also a pharmacon. Taken in a narrower sense, a pharmacon means a substance that is used for therapeutic purposes. An unequivocal term for such a substance is medicinal drug.
