No-Thing

The second axiom, which is reminiscent of Mach s principle, also contains the seeds of Leibniz s Monads [reschQl]. All is process. That is to say, there is no thing in the universe. Things, objects, entities, are abstractions of what is relatively constant from a process of movement and transformation. They are like the shapes that children like to see in the clouds. The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations (see section 12.7.1) remind us that what we empirically accept as fundamental particles - electrons, atoms, molecules, etc. - actually never exist in total isolation. Moreover, recalling von Neumann s uniqueness theorem for canonical commutation relations (which asserts that for locally compact phase spaces all Hilbert-space representations of the canonical commutation relations are physically equivalent), we note that for systems with non-locally-compact phase spaces, the uniqueness theorem fails, and therefore there must be infinitely many physically inequivalent and... 

These assumptions having been accepted as required, we consider the total number of ways of arranging the ui identical molecules of the solvent and identical molecules of the solute on the lattice comprising no = ni+ri2 cells. This is just the number of combinations of no things taken Ui at a time, or...

Naranjo and Omstein 39 describe the meditative stateJT] of consciousness that can result from concentrative meditation as a discrete state characterized as "voidness," "blankness," or "no-thingness." There seems to be a temporary nonfunctioning of all psychological functions. In some sense, difficult to deal with verbally, awareness seems to be maintained, but there is not object of awareness. The appearance of this meditative state seems to be sudden and to clearly represent a quantum leap. The practice of meditation quiets down the various subsystems, but there is a sudden transition to this pattern of voidness. 

Paracelsus built on a homeopathic doctrine from folk medicine of treating like with like, or poisons with poisons. Poison is in everything, he noted, and no thing is without poison. The dosage makes it either a poison or a remedy. 10 Under this rubric, he brought highly toxic chemicals such as mercury and arsenic into popular use, sparking a wave of anxieties about the effects of new, mysterious, and powerful substances. 

The edge of nonexistence is the threshold of the outside, where the dichotomies of sense and non-sense are not yet operative, where there is no-thing, only bodies and flows. This edge, the verge of race, is the absence of the interracial occult, the supplement that cannot be comprehended by racial reason. It is the night in which the outline of the signified thing vanishes and where only the imponderable affect is carried out (10).

But consider this Every safety professional who writes a recommendation to eliminate or control a hazard makes a risk acceptance decision. It cannot be presumed that complying with the recommendation achieves zero risk. No thing or activity is risk-free. Also, in the practical world, all risks will not be eliminated. Even when deciding which risks are to be given priority consideration, a risk acceptance decision is made about those risks to be dealt with later, if only for the short term.
