Nitrophenols poly compounds

It is of pedagogical value to discuss the first two supercritical fluid-enzyme catalysis papers that appeared within two months of each other (Randolph et al., 1985 Hammond et al., 1985). Randolph studied the hydrolysis of the disodium salt of p-nitrophenyl phosphoric acid reacting to p-nitrophenol. Hammond studied the catalytic oxidation of p-substituted phenols to first, orthocatecholic compounds and in series to o-quinone compounds, which very quickly polymerize by chemical, not enzymatic, mechanisms to form o-quinoid polymers. The product recovered is a poly(o-quinone). 

High-molecular mass surfactants such as butyl acrylate-butyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid copolymer sodium salts, starburst dendrimers, poly(amidoamines), and diaminobutane-based poly(propyleneimine) as well as cationic polyelectrolytes (ionenes) had all been presented as successful secondary phases for aromatic compounds. As might be expected, radical acceptors (aromatic amine and phenolic compounds) can influence the solution rheology of degraded polymers [45] (Table 3.9). The best acceptors for polystyrene are hydroquinone and /7-aminophenol (which favors substitution in the nucleus) and the poorest are / -nitrophenol and pentachlorophenol (which hinder substitution). In general, the order of acceptor activity was the same as that for poly(methyl methacrylate). The relative efficiency of oxygen, however, is lower for polystyrene, as this polymer forms relatively stable peroxy radicals, which can react with polymer radicals, as follows, minimizing the molecular weight reduction ...
