Although the alkoxy derivatives are easier to process than —[MeHSiO]0.3 [MeSiO1.5J0.7-, the pyrolysis behavior of both types of materials is much the same. Thus we will briefly look at the transformation processes that occur as —[MeHSiO]0.3 [MeSiO1.5J0.7- decomposes to black glass. Pyrolysis of —[MeHSiOJ0.3CMeSiO1.5J0.7- in air leads to formation of pure silica (80-85% ceramic yield) at temperatures of 800-900 °C. In nitrogen, the ceramic yield is 70-75 wt% at 900 °C. [Pg.2291]

Nitrogen transformation in the sediment is governed primarily by bacteria (Wood, 1965), and the decomposition of proteinaceous material takes place in aerobic as well as in the anaerobic environment due to various deamination reactions (or ammoniafication) performed by a variety of microorganisms. The final product of the deamination process is ammonium. Ammonium, as opposed to nitrate, is easily adsorbed by the clay minerals, and the sediment may act as a sink for nitrogen.
