Nicotiana repanda

A mixture of A -hydroxyacylnornicotines (4), including lV -(3-hydroxy- 12-methyl-tridecanoyl)nomicotine as the major component, was extracted from leaves of Nicotiana repanda, N. stocktonii and N. nesophila [63]. The mixture was toxic to larvae of the tobacco homworm, Manduca sexta [63]. Feeding experiments with [2-14C]-nicotine and [2-l cj-nornicotine suggested that the hydroxyacylnomicotines were biosynthesized in trichomes and then rapidly secreted from the plant [64], The hydroxyacylnomicotines inhibited the growth of wheat coleoptiles and displayed antibiotic activity [65].

The acyl derivative profile in total was quite similar in the three Repandae species (Huesing et al. 1989). The occurrence of such metabolites is of chemotaxo-nomic relevance for this section, since they turned out to be absent from 65 other Nicotiana species (Huesing and Jones 1987).

Heemann et al. could not find any diterpenoids in the leaf surface gum neither in the cultivated N. rustica nor in 13 further wild Nicotiana spp. (N. acuminata, N. africana, N. alata, N. debneyi, N. glauca, N. knightiana, N. langsdorffii, N. longiflora, N. megalosiphon, N. paniculata, N. plumbaginifolia N. repanda, N. sanderae authorities see Table 3.4).
