The process is based on fermentation of a dextrose-based feedstock such as corn starch, with three key advantages greater elficiency by reducing the number of steps in the conventional process electrically driven advanced membrane separation stage, eliminating an undesirable salt by-product patented purification-separation system (seen as the key to the economics of the process). 

In the conventional process the presence of water limits the reaction to only about 60% completion. The Argonne system enables excess water to be selectively removed, making it possible to Increase the reaction to nearly 100% completion, with higher purity and lower processing costs.
