Neuronal Nicotinic Receptors

Few drugs, apart from nicotine itself, act specifically on nicotine receptors. One is methylcarbachol, which lacks the muscarinic effects of carbachol and another is dimethylphenylpiperazinium (DMPP), which appears to have some selectivity for the neuronal nicotinic receptor. Neither of them can cross the blood-brain barrier. [Pg.128]

Memantine is the first in a novel class of Alzheimer s disease medications acting a.o. on the NMDA receptor of the glutamatergic system. It also acts as an uncompetitive antagonist at different neuronal nicotinic receptors at potencies possibly similar to the NMDA receptor. Memantine is approved for treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer s disease and its use is associated with a moderate decrease in clinical deterioration of the disease. Common adverse drug reactions (>1% of patients) include confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia, agitation, and/or hallucinations. [Pg.359]

Neuronal nicotinic receptors are present on sensory nerve endings—especially afferent nerves in coronary arteries and the carotid and aortic bodies as well as on the glomus cells of the latter. Activation of these receptors by nicotinic stimulants and of muscarinic receptors on glomus cells by muscarinic stimulants elicits complex medullary responses, including respiratory alterations and vagal discharge. [Pg.139]
