Negative and positive ions

A characteristic feature of an electrochemical cell is that the electronic current, which is the movement of electrons in the external circuit, is generated by the electrochemical processes at the electrodes. In contrast to the electronic current, the charge is transported between the positive and the negative electrode in the electrolyte by ions. Generally the current in the electrolyte consists of the movement of negative and positive ions. [Pg.4]

TLC coupled with mass spectrometry employing desorption electrospray ionization has been used for the separation of synthetic dyes. The chemical structures of dyes included in the investigation are shown in Fig. 3.7. Mass spectrometers work equally well for negative and positive ions by reversing voltages where the ions are formed and detected. To detect negative ions, a conversion dynode with a positive potential is placed before the conventional detector. When bombarded by negative ions, this dynode liberates positive ions that are accelerated into the electron multiplier, which amplifies the signal. [Pg.475]

In some crystals the presence of ions can be demonstrated without making use of destructive techniques. These crystals produce an electric effect when they are compressed.
