Naturally occurring screening

The Calcium Halophosphate Phosphors. Early fluorescent lamps used various combinations of naturally occurring fluorescent minerals. The development of the calcium halophosphate phosphor, Ca (P0 2(Cl, F) Sb ", Mn, in the 1940s was a significant breakthrough in fluorescent lighting (7). As is often the case in new phosphor discoveries, this phosphor was found accidentally while searching for phosphors for radar screens. 

Over the years, thousands of compounds have been tried as cracking catalysts. These compounds fall into two general categories natural and synthetic. Natural catalyst, as the name denotes, is a naturally occurring clay that is given relatively mild treating and screening before use. The synthetic catalysts are of more importance because of their widespread use. Of the synthetic catalysts, two main types are amorphous and zeolitic. 

One example of a naturally occurring diazirine, duazomycin A (137 Scheme 11.20), has been reported, isolated in 1985 from a Streptomyces species during a screen for herbicidal compounds [196], It was fotind to inhibit de novo starch synthesis and it was suggested that this is due to direct inhibition of protein synthesis. Duazomycin A is structurally related to 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine (138), also reported as a natural product from Streptomyces [197], which acts as a glutamine antagonist and inhibits purine biosynthesis [198],... 

Traditionally, libraries of enzymes - either naturally occurring or deliberately created mutants - are created in bacterial cells and the resulting clones are screened (Fig. 2, left). This is a time-tested strategy, but it suffers from two...

However, the affinity of 43 was higher than that of the allylic derivative 72 and near to that of codeine, though 5-fold less (74). Recently, some naturally occurring hasubanan alkaloids have been submitted to screening for antitumor activity, but the results, as far as we know, remain obscure. 

New modifiers have traditionally been discovered by the trial-and-error method. Many naturally occurring chiral compounds (the chiral pool38) have been screened as possible modifiers. Thus, the hydrogenation product of the synthetic drug vinpocetine was discovered to be a moderately effective modifier of Pt and Pd for the enantioselective hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate and isophorone.39 Likewise, ephedrine, emetine, strychnine, brucine, sparteine, various amino acids and hydroxy acids, have been identified as chiral modifiers of heterogeneous catalysts.38...
