Fungicides natural

Research on natural fungicides and bactericides has become of major worldwide importance. The U. S. antibiotics industry, based entirely on this field of research, now produces over 1000 tons of these substances annually, valued at more than 250,000,000. The names are becoming common words—streptomycin, penicillin, bacitracin, Terramycin.

Foliar sprays of tea made from mature compost act as natural fungicides against the early stages of leaf blights, powdery mildew, and similar diseases by introducing competitive, beneficial microorganisms to infected plants. When compost is applied around plants as a thin layer of mulch, its beneficial microorganisms may benefit the lower sections of plants (when splashed up by rain) as well as the soil. 

A solution made by soaking finished compost in water not only provides important nutrients to plants, it also serves as a natural fungicide. See Composting for Insect and Disease Control" on page 425 for details on how to make compost tea and use it as a fungicide.
