National Wildlife Refuge System

Between 1903 and 1909, President Theodore Roosevelt created 150 national forests, conserving land, wildlife, and habitat for the future. President Roosevelt also created fifty-one federal bird reservations. These later became part of the United States National Wildlife Refuge System. The California condor, the largest North American vulture, was at the brink of extinction in 1987 as a result of lead poisoning, habitat loss, and shooting. Only twenty-two individuals remained. These were taken into captivity and through captive breeding, their numbers had increased to 381 by late 2010,192 of which had been released into the wild. [Pg.1965]
