Still a fellow, Mulliken moved to the Jefferson Physical Laboratory at Harvard in 1923. Helped by F. A. Saunders and Kemble, he started working on molecular spectroscopy and became deeply involved in the preparation of the National Research Council report on the spectra of diatomic molecules mentioned earlier. By 1926, Mulliken became assistant professor of physics at New York University, already recognized as an expert on band spectra.
