Today, in the United States, doctors write 123 million prescriptions every year to treat depression. More than 40 million people all over the world take antidepressant drugs. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the number of women diagnosed as suffering from severe depression in the United States doubled from 1970 to 1992. The World Health Organization predicts that depression will become the most common disabling disorder in the world by 2020, second only to heart disease.

Articulate, intense, and energetic, Metaksa is often found on the front lines of the pundit circuit when gun control legislation is being debated in Congress. Metaksa s prominent role in the NRA leadership may also reflect the organization s conscious effort in recent years to appeal to women.
