Narrative, story

When many people hear the word narrative, they think of a made-up story. But not all stories are fiction. In this chapter we are not concerned with writing literary short stories—that s a skill you may work on in a creative writing class—but rather with nonfiction expository narratives, stories that are used to explain or prove a point. We most often use two kinds of these stories ... [Pg.339]

The cornerstone of a reporting system is robust analysis of theme and detection of patterns within the data. After the sharp-end worker shares the narrative story about what happened, a case analysis is conducted and deidentified. The case analysis provides a window into the system to view error-producing conditions (Vincent, 2001). The analysis should provide a diagnosis of the problems in a system. A case analysis, performed for accidents, potential accidents, and near misses, accomplishes two goals ... [Pg.129]

A reporting system should encourage narrative stories to understand how systems and processes are working to mitigate risk and develop resilience. [Pg.147]

Games without narrative stories are the ones in which you can have the nx>st impact sports games. The Sims, and chess are examples. [Pg.372]

One form of game isn t innately better or worse than the other many players enjoy multiple forms of gameplay. And so one form of impact the player can have on the game isnt innately superior. The more of a "real" impact you have in the game, the less there can be anything that resembles narrative story. The more the game contains a narrative story, the more your impact in the game resides in the smaller details, but not the overall direction and shape of the outcome. [Pg.372]

After the preliminary tests are made on a promising catalyst and some insight gained on the process, it is time to do a kinetic study and model development. The method of a kinetic study can be best explained on an actual industrial problem. Because more can be learned from a failure than from a success, the oxidation of propylene to acrolein is an instructive attempt at process development. (Besides, to get permission to publish a success is more difficult than to solve the problem itself) Some details of the development work follow in narrative form to make the story short and to avoid embarrassing anyone. [Pg.124]

These stories describe some of the roads taken to solve the puzzle of illness caused by exposure to chemicals. For many the journey is long and involves a parade of doctors and misdiagnoses. Often MCS is discounted by health care professionals and others who doubt the validity of the illness. When the validity of an illness is discounted, the ill suffer profound discord within their world, according to Kathy Charmaz in her book Good Days, Bad Days The Self in Chronic Illness and Time. This discord can be heard in the collection of narratives in this volume. [Pg.10]

In this chapter we have heard different accounts of the ways psychotropic drugs affect users senses of themselves. In some cases medication allowed people to realize their authentic selves or to function at a higher level. In this sense their narratives are success stories, even miracles. In other cases, by contrast, people described psychiatric drugs as masking or even devastating their authentic selves. As a result they were typically resistant to or ambivalent about medication. [Pg.125]
