Principles of management of SUDs are very similar to those for the management of alcoholism. The goal is a treatment approach that enhances the probability of abstinence from the substance, assists the patient in rebuilding a life free of substances, and works to prevent relapse. Narcotics Anonymous may be very helpful for some patients. 

Narcotics addiction provides the classic model of drug dependence, and many of our current notions of drug abuse are based on it. For example, the fundamental principle that addiction con= sists of three features — craving for the drug, tolerance, and withdrawal — developed from observations of opiate addicts. Many popular beliefs about narcotics are untrue, however, and the whole subject is highly contaminated by prejudice and emotion. 

Opium contains many peculiar chemical principles, but its narcotic properties are chiefly owing to one of these, the alkaloid Morphia. Of this, good opium contains about twelve percent, in combination with Meconic acid. Tliis morphia may be extracted from opium, and used separately, either in the pure form or in combination with various acids, with which it forms salts soluble in water and spirit. Morphia resembles opium in its action, but is rather less stimulating. It may be used in the same cases. 

Menispermacea, or Moonseed Family.—Choripetalous woody, climbing, tropical plants with alternate, exstipulate, simple often peltate leaves. Flowers green to white. Fruit a one-seeded succulent drupe. Seeds albuminous. They usually contain tonic, narcotic or poisonous bitter principles. 

In a situation analogous to that in the United States of America, legislation covering drugs of abuse has been written at the Territory and Commonwealth levels. The two principle documents relevant at Commonwealth level are the Customs Act, 1901 and the Crimes (Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act, 1990.
