Na-alginate

Na-alginate is natural polysaccharide extracted from seaweeds, with a large availability in nature. Chemically, alginate composed of block polymers namely polyguluronate [poly-G], poly-mannuromate [poly-M] and their copolymer in random sequence [8, 72]. [Pg.239]

Alginate is an excellent gel forming materials capable of holding a huge amount of water, in presence of polyvalent cations, e.g., Ca,  [Pg.239]

Two hydrogels of calcium alginate and chitosan-calcium alginate composite were prepared from Na alginate and its composite with chitosan by soaking in O.IM aq. CaCla. A biomimic fixation of aqueous COa - ions as CaCOa was performed. Each of the hydrogels was put into a dialysis membrane tube, and was soaked in 0.1 M aq. NaaCOa (pH 11) at room temperature for 1 day to afford a white precipitate of CaCOa or chitosan-CaCOa and a water-soluble sodium alginate. The dry chitosan-CaCOs composite (60% chitosan and 23% COa -) was stable in aqueous alkaline solutions and unstable in aqueous acidic solutions. [Pg.621]

The hydrogel obtained above was put into a diaiysis membrane tube, and was soaked in 500 ml of aq. 0.1 M NazCOs solution (pH ii) with gentle stirring at room temperature for 1 day. Calcium carbonate appeared as a white precipitate (0.10 g), and Na alginate was solubilized. The precipitate was collected by filtration and dried to afford CaCOa in 0.10 g yield,... [Pg.622]
