N-Dodecylamines

Relationships connecting stmcture and properties of primary alkylamines of normal stmcture C, -C gin chloroform and other solvents with their ability to extract Rh(III) and Ru(III) HCA from chloride solutions have been studied. The out-sphere mechanism of extraction and composition of extracted associates has been ascertained by UV-VIS-, IR-, and H-NMR spectroscopy, saturation method, and analysis of organic phase. Tertiary alkylamines i.e. tri-n-octylamine, tribenzylamine do not extract Ru(III) and Rh(III) HCA. The decrease of radical volume of tertiary alkylamines by changing of two alkyl radicals to methyl make it possible to diminish steric effects and to use tertiary alkylamines with different radicals such as dimethyl-n-dodecylamine which has not been used previously for the extraction of Rh(III), Ru(III) HCA with localized charge.

In a typical sol-gel preparation of an organically modified mesoporous solid a total of 0.1 mole of silane (made up of x mole of tetrethoxysilane and 0.1 - x mole of trialkoxy(monofuntional)silane) is added to a solution of the templating amine (typically n-dodecylamine) in aqueous ethanol. The template is removed from the subsequent gel by washing with ethanol after which the material is filtered and dried. 

The catalysts are prepared as described previously. [6] The templating solution consists of a solution of n-dodecylamine (5.09 g) in aqueous ethanol (53 ml water and 46 ml ethanol). To this is added a total of 0.1 mol silane. The reaction is allowed to proceed for 18 h at room temperature. After filtration and extraction of template with ethanol, the material is filtered and dried. The filtrate from the preparation is generally free of unreacted silanes, indicating that all the silanes are condensed, a fact borne out by the excellent agreement between theoretical and experimental composition. The template and the ethanol can both be recovered pure (the template with 99% efficiency). Both can be reused, as can the templating solution. Solid-contact pH sensors can be constructed by using polypyrrole [45,59] or polyaniline [92,96] as ion-to-electron transducer in combination with pH-selective membranes based on plasticized PVC [45,59,92,96]. The dynamic pH range of the sensors depend on the pH ionophore used in the plasticized PVC membranes, as follows tri-n-dodecylamine (pH 2-12) [45], tris(2-phenylethyl)amine (pH 4.5-12.6) [59], tris(3-phenylpropyl)amine (pH 4.6-13.2) [59], tribenzylamine (pH 2.5-11.2) [92,96], dibenzylnaphtalenemethylamine (pH 0.65-10.0) [96], dibenzylpyrenemethyl-amine (pH 0.50-10.2) [96]. Suggested applications include pH measurements in body fluids such as serum [45,96], whole blood [92], and cow milk [59].

Tetraethoxysilane (TES 28 SQ) and aqueous ammonia (reagent grade, 32 wt%) were a gift from Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. 2-propanol (99+ %), n-dodecylamine (98 %) and n-hexadecylamine (90 %) were purchased from Aldrich, Steinheim, Germany.
