The mechanism of reduction of an A-oxide, the antibiotic myxin, 6-methoxy-l-phenazinol 5,10-dioxide, has also been examined [19]. Below pH 3, the protonated species of myxin is reduced in a single four-electron step to 6-methoxy-l-phenazinol, whereas between pH 3 and 9, two two-electron steps are observed that are most likely due to the formation of an intermediate, which is in turn reduced to 6-methoxy-l-phenazinol. At pH values greater than 9, a single wave is observed, apparently due to the four-electron reduction of the anion to 6-methoxyphenazinol. The postulated mechanism is shown in Figure 26.3. [Pg.777]
