So far no one has been able to demonstrate beyond doubt in which of the above states the formaldehyde actually exists. However, at the 4th Annual International Symposium on Adhesion and Adhesives for Structural Materials in Pullman, WA, September 1984, George Myers presented a paper concluding that "most of the formaldehyde in a board is chemically, not physically bonded to resin, to wood, to itself as a polymer, or to ammonia"... 

Anthony Mazzeo is a Principal Scientist in the Exploratory Biopharmaceutics and Stability group at the New Brunswick R D site of Bristol-Myers Squibb in New Jersey. He received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Syracuse University under Professor George Levy.

The /3-lactam synthon approach pioneered by Holton, Ojima, and Georg remains the most widely used method, and is the method currently used by Bristol-Myers Squibb for the commercial synthesis of taxol.
