Powder patterns. Sample A was highly crystalline and showed two interconvertible powder patterns one at high relative humidity (76% - 98%), and the other in vacuo (Table III). The d spacings of these patterns differ from those of fiber patterns of either sample B or sample C (Table I). Mutan (sample D) also showed a clear pattern similar to that of sample A in vacuo. However, this pattern did not change by varying the relative humidity (Table IE). 

Although chlorhexidine affects virtually all bacteria, gram-positive bacteria are more susceptible than are gram-negative organisms. Furthermore, Streptococcus mutans and Antinomies viscosus seem to be particularly sensitive. S. mutans has been associated with the formation of carious lesions in fissures and on interproximal tooth surfaces and has been identified in large numbers in plaque and saliva samples of subjects with high caries activity.

Saliva samples were collected to estimate the amount of salivary mutans streptococci counts the difference in the post follow up mutans streptococci count of the treated group, compared to the reference group, was highly significant with a p value <0.001. 

Epidemiological studies in which comparisons were made of plaque samples from two human populations, one with a high and the other with a low caries incidence, often showed a relationship between the presence of S. mutans and the incidence of carious lesions.
